An Ornamental History

An Ornamental History

Every year in December, many of us buy Christmas trees and hang little ornaments. Decorating the tree together as a family has become a tradition over the generations...but how and where did it all start?

It wasn’t the United States, contrary to popular belief. Correct answer is Germany!

Although many historians believe that the idea of using evergreen trees to celebrate the winter solstice can be traced back to ancient times in Egypt, the “modern day” Christmas tree is believed to have originated from Germany in the 1500s. Small evergreen trees were adorned with fruits, candles, and nuts and used in church plays. Also known as “paradise trees,” eventually Christian families began to include these trees in their own home during the holidays. After that, the tradition spread throughout Europe.

As Germans emigrated to the United States in the 1700s and 1800s, they continued the tradition in the United States. Many Americans rejected the practice believing it was a pagan ritual. However, German families kept practicing it in secret. Everything changed in America when a photo of Queen Victoria and her German-born husband Albert were shown with a lavish Christmas tree in 1840.

Who doesn’t want to emulate a queen right? Eventually, many American families started adopting the practice. Businesses realized the potential for profit in selling ornaments to decorate trees...and the rest is history!

By the 1890s, Woolworth’s Department Store was selling $25 MILLION dollars in German-imported glass ornaments. Fast forward to 2019, many businesses make their own ornaments and sell them in November and December annually. Glass, tinsel, yarn, silk and wool are often used to make ornaments. Although the historical and religious significance may have been lost over the centuries, culturally, Christmas tree decorating has become a staple.

We at Axiom Print make acrylic ornaments where you can print a photo of yourself or a family member!

It’s our newest product and we are excited to offer it this year! Make the ornaments on your tree extra special with personalized acrylic ornaments.

LA Solar Group Case Study

Founded by Ara Petrosyan, LA Solar Group has been providing clean energy solutions since 2011. After all, renewable energy is the future. They started with only two employees and now have 180 employees over 14 offices in 7 states. They are one of the leading solar companies in the country.

We are thrilled that LA Solar Group has been a longtime client of ours.

LA Solar Group continues to prosper and that’s what we want for all our clients. They offer low cost, high quality solar panels along with installation and maintenance services.

Here are the main five ways we have helped LA Solar Group with their marketing needs:

  1. Business Cards
  2. Coroplast Signs
  3. Presentation Folders
  4. Door Hangers
  5. Stickers

We’d like to point out something clever LA Solar Group did with their coroplast signs and door hangers.

When they are working on a residential or commercial property, they park a coroplast sign out front so they can benefit from brand visibility while people walk by. For the houses nearby that would be most affected by the installation, they place door hangers which serve as a memo so people know what to expect. On the backside is also a discount should they be interested after seeing what their neighbor installed.

Integrated marketing strategies are the most effective and having a well rounded strategy is something we can help with because of our years of experience in printing.

For one of their sister offices, Bay Solar Group, we have also done a car wrap. Watch now!

Axiom Print is Hosting a Fundraiser

As a locally owned Armenian business in Glendale, we have been greatly affected by the war ravaging abroad. Many of our employees have family and friends overseas that have volunteered to join the war effort. There have been many casualties on both sides. We wanted to come up with a way to contribute. In our production facility, we designed and printed lovely Armenian ornaments and car stickers that people can purchase.

If you purchase any of our Armenian ornaments, 100% of the proceeds go directly to the Armenia Fund

Yes, we said 100% and we mean it. We want to do our part to support Armenia with humanitarian aid during the war and the ongoing pandemic.  The Armenia Fund was established in 1994 in Los Angeles. It is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, non-governmental, non-political corporation that has sent over $120 million of infrastructure development assistance and humanitarian aid to the people of Armenia and Karabagh.

Our goal is to raise $5000 by the end of the month, November 30.

Halloween in 2020

Halloween in 2020

Corn mazes, haunted houses, zombie runs, pumpkin patches, hayrides...oh what eerie, scary fun the month of October provides us! After all, who doesn’t love a good fright! Although this year, we have a real fright that no one loves...a pandemic. A pandemic that has shrouded this whole year in darkness...okay maybe we are being a bit melodramatic? But are we, though? Those who have encountered real losses this year aren’t too excited about Halloween and why should they be?

If it’s not the pandemic people are worrying about, it’s the upcoming election, racial injustices, job security, or bills.

But for some people, this Halloween is meant to be a way to distract them from real problems and enjoy that adrenaline rush. If you are interested in Halloween, look at safe ways to still celebrate the macabre day. Since many of the events adults look forward to in October have been canceled to reduce the spread of COVID-19, you’ll have to check your local listings to see if people are still offering some outdoor scary entertainment.

Either way, add a mask on for protection and make it part of your costume.

The CDC is recommending doing virtual Halloween parties to encourage people to stay indoors and quarantine themselves. It’s also considered low risk to host small gatherings outside where people can stay six feet away with masks, such as a movie night on a projector in a big yard.

If you have children, many neighborhoods may still be doing trick or treating, but with modifications. Some people may just leave the pot of candy outside so they don’t have to open the door. Others are making goodie bags and waving to people outside while staying 6 feet away, such as on a driveway. Trick-or-treaters are also recommended to only go with their immediate family members instead of going with friends and to keep 6 feet away from other people.

On behalf of Axiom Print, we hope you have a safe and scary Halloween!

Sierra Madre Playhouse

Sierra Madre Playhouse

Sierra Madre Playhouse is an award winning theater in a city nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley. The town of Sierra Madre has had a love for drama dating back to the 1880s, even before the playhouse was built. People used to watch live drama and musicals at the Town Hall or Women’s club, even people’s homes!

In 1923, the playhouse was built but under a different name. It was called the Wistaria Theater. Why Wistaria, you ask?

The largest wistaria vine in the world is in Sierra Madre, CA, hence its original name.

In 1929, it was renamed after the city to the Sierra Madre Theater. The idea was that the Sierra Madre Theater will be the central hub for family friendly entertainment. It was a movie hall and arcade before a renowned playhouse. In 1980, the name was changed to the Sierra Madre Playhouse. In order to keep it running, several local citizens banded together to make it into a nonprofit organization. In 2014, with Christian Lebano as the artistic director, the playhouse changed to focus on American theater and began to receive recognition from grants, NAACP, and Ovation Awards.

Sierra Madre Playhouse has been coming to us for several of their printing needs!

Smile for the Camera

We live in an age where everyone wants their next great profile photo. Whether you’re needing a professional photo for LinkedIn or you want to update your Facebook avatar that’s a year old, profile photos are needed everywhere. The time to crop your friends out of your photo to make your profile photo is gone. When people attend events with a backdrop banner, they tend to use their photo from that event.

Having your logo in the backdrop banner allows your business brand visibility.

Many people associate backdrop banners with the glamorous movie premieres or award ceremonies like the Oscars. Well, that’s how it started! You may have heard the term, step and repeat? Well, step and repeat banners are the same as backdrop banners. Step and repeat was coined when a movie star stopped in front of the banner at the end of the red carpet to pose for paparazzi and then the process repeated with the next celebrity in line until everyone had been photographed. Another meaning for step and repeat was derived from the photoshop method of making step and repeat banners because you create an image and repeat it over and over again in the same file. With the influx of social media and obsession over photos taken on phones, businesses started catching on. Now, it’s almost expected at a corporate event to have a backdrop banner.

If you’re at a tradeshow and your competitor’s booth includes a fun backdrop banner, you’ve already lost.

Another recent use of backdrop banners has been at speeches, interviews or presentations. It looks more professional to have a nice backdrop behind your guest speaker. Plus, if it’s a big product reveal or announcement, then it’s highly likely that a reporter covering the event will probably use a photo taken in front of the backdrop banner.

Another use case we have seen is when a charity event for example prints out a backdrop banner that showcases multiple logos to include all their sponsors.

Overall, backdrop banners are everywhere. Plus, they’re reusable if taken care of properly.

Car Magnets - Everything You Needed to Know

Car Magnets: Everything You Needed to Know

As a small business, you may decide to register your personal vehicle as a commercial one in your state instead of buying a separate commercial vehicle. This is more common than you know. Car magnets provide you with the flexibility to market your brand when you need to and easily remove it when you’re not using your vehicle for commercial use.

With little maintenance, car magnets are a great way to increase your brand visibility!

Whether you’re on the road driving or you’re parked, you will get exposure. The most popular sizes for car magnets are typically 12 in by 18 in for a sedan and 18 in x 24 in for a pickup truck or van. When you’re designing your magnet, you want to make sure your font is as big as possible. For example, if your letters are 9 inches tall, then people can still read it from about 300 feet away. That’s the length of an average football field!

As for recommended placement, try displaying the magnet on the side door of your car or the tailgate of your truck. Make sure your car is clean and dry before you place the magnet. The surface needs to be completely flat otherwise you risk the magnet coming off...oh and don’t forget about the air bubbles! Make sure to avoid air bubbles between your magnet and vehicle. Remember to regularly remove your car magnet to avoid moisture buildup and to also clean your car to remove debris or dust particles. It’s easy to clean a car magnet, just use a wet paper towel and then wait for it to dry. If you have a smudge or something, feel free to use Windex.

So we’ve spent time explaining everything we thought you should know about car magnets. However, you may have heard some “negative rumors” or “myths” about car magnets. Let’s share some of those and debunk them for you and offer solutions.

“I heard car magnets fall off the highway!”

Unless your car magnet is made of cheap quality, is not flat on your car’s surface or there are air bubbles or flipped corners, you should NOT worry about this. You can also get rounded corners to help with that concern.

“I heard car magnets are not legal.”

That’s definitely false. They are totally legal, otherwise we wouldn’t sell them...you should check your local and state laws in case you need to file for a commercial vehicle license in order to display them, but that is usually referring to car wraps, decals, etc.

“I heard car magnets don’t always stick to your car.”

Well...if you’re driving a corvette or you have car parts that are made of plastic, fiberglass, aluminum...then the magnet won’t stick. You need metal or iron for the magnet to work.

“I heard car magnets can corrode the metal.”

The reason why most people see corrosion is whey they leave their car magnet on for long periods of time. You have to keep removing the magnet otherwise the moisture buildup is what causes the corrosion. Also, make sure to take the car magnet off before going through a car wash.

“I heard car magnets will scratch my paint.”

This is similar to the comment above, but you have to regularly clean and make sure the magnet and vehicle are dry. Over time, your vehicle gets dirty and that dirt or debris from driving gets trapped between the magnet and vehicle. If you try to slide your magnet off, that debris caught in the middle can scratch your paint.

3 Reasons to Buy Yard Signs

3 Reasons to Buy Yard Signs

As much as you may have noticed your neighbor’s yard sign while walking your dog, you didn’t realize the type of impact that may have made on you. Yard signs are everywhere. Most often, you see people placing yard signs for their favorite candidate during local, regional, or national elections. Another common yard sign example is when realtors promote their business while the house is on the market. The third most common is when local businesses post their yard signs on people’s lawns (e.g., home security, lawn care, etc.).

Yard signs are displayed year round because they elicit action.

As you drive by or walk by a yard sign, you can’t help but look at it. Let’s get to the technical aspects of yard signs, everything that you ever needed to know before we get to the three reasons people buy them.

Yard signs have many names: lawn signs, bandit signs, road signs or placards. The most common type of yard signs are ones made of corrugated plastic sheets and the most common manufacturer is coroplast. The plastic sheets are hollow and between them are small pipes called “flutes.” Depending on which way your sign will be displayed (vertically or horizontally), the direction of the pipes will be either vertical or horizontal. A metal H stand easily slides into those pipes and then the other side is planted into the ground. The two most common sizes are 18 x 24 inches and 12 x 18 inches. We offer custom shapes and sizes as well.

Now that we’ve explained the technical side of coroplast yard signs, below are the three reasons why you should consider buying them.

Visibility

Outside of word-of-mouth referrals, signs are responsible for more than 50% of new customers checking out a store, according to the United States Chamber of Commerce. Now this statistic is about signs in general, but yard signs are one of the signs cited. We mentioned this earlier, but people notice yard signs and read them regardless of whether they’re interested or not...it’s natural.

Affordability

With a high success rate of people noticing yard signs, you’d think they’d be more expensive. Coroplast yard signs are one of the cheapest signs to print. If you’re a small business, your marketing budget may not be very big, so yard signs are economical.

Durability

Coroplast yard signs can be placed year round outside. Corrugated plastic is quite resilient to harsh weather conditions. Plus they’re easy to clean, if needed. They don’t need much maintenance, you just post them in your yard and leave them alone.

We hope you found this week’s blog post helpful. This November, we have a big election coming up, so order your coroplast yard signs now!
