In observance of Memorial day we want to remember and thank all the men and women who have died in military service for our nation.
Is Memorial Day a public holiday?
Memorial Day is a federal holiday. All government offices, schools, businesses and organizations are closed. People observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, meeting family members and friends or participating in parades. Traditionally, people fly the flag of the United States from dawn until noon. It’s believed that it marks the beginning of the summer season. Memorial Day was originally celebrated on May 30th. But in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which suggested that Memorial Day be celebrated on the last Monday in May so that people could have a three-day weekend. The change took effect in 1971.
The history of Memorial Day
This special day was previously known as Decoration Day. Initially, the Decoration Day was honored only by those who died in the civil war. After the Civil War, there was a need for a public holiday to honor military men and women who died in service, as monuments were made, and ceremonies such as the decoration of soldiers’ graves were held in towns and cities throughout the nation. But after World War I, The Memorial Day is dedicated to those who have died in all American wars.
