Every great new print product usually starts the same way: With a client asking for something that makes you pause, tilt your head, and say, “Wait… what?” This one started with a simple phone call. A client asked if we could produce pretend play passports. At first, we weren’t entirely sure what that meant. It was a new term and we were not even sure if it's possible to produce. It wasn’t something we had listed online. And it definitely wasn’t something you see every day in a commercial print shop. So instead of defaulting to “no,” we asked to get back to the client, since it's a pretty unique request. The first thing we did was jump on Google and try to really understand what those passports are and what purpose they serve.
 

<h2>Understanding the Product</h2>


 What we discovered was simple but clever: a small booklet, with rounded corners and stitched binding - designed to look and feel like a real passport, but used purely for creative and marketing purposes. The word "Pretend" was the hint. 
They are being used for branding or promotions like private events, product launches, corporate culture building events and even for movie premiers. All follow the same format, but each tells a different story. 
They have also become very popular as wedding invitations, often paired with a special event program and a short story that introduces the couple, their journey, and the celebration ahead.

<h2>Getting to Producing the first order</h2>

As we understand what the final product is, now we are ready to start. Since we can't start without files, our team called the client back with a straight forward answer. "We haven't done these small passports, but we are ready to test. Please send the files over". 
The printing was pretty easy and straight forward. The real challenge was stitching. These passports are small - much smaller than standard booklets and traditional saddle stitching doesn’t love small formats. The paper shifts and registration gets really tricky. 
So the team got to work.
After testing, adjusting, and crapping a few early attempts the solution came together. We found a custom workaround with a hand made jig that allowed us to stitch cleanly, consistently, and at scale, without sacrificing durability or alignment. Old-school problem solving.


<h2>From Custom Job to Click-to-Order</h2>
Once the first batch was produced and delivered, we realized this wasn’t just a one-off request. Few other account managers claimed that their clients have asked for a similar product and we had to quote it as a custom job. 
So we did what we believe in with our simple 3 step process:
