Most people think printing is easy. Just a Click of a Button, and the perfect print is ready! Right?
And honestly, they’re not wrong to think that. With today’s advanced printers, software, and workflows, it feels like print should be instant. But here’s the big BUT: It’s everything before the press that takes real time and effort. It’s the behind-the-scenes process that makes all the difference between a quality print and a rejected order. At AxiomPrint, our internal stats tell a surprising story:
 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The average print job takes more time in pre-press than it does in production.
 That’s not a one-off. That’s the reality. We have measured collaborative minutes on banners and it’s about 47 min on average pre production (Phone/Email Communication, Artwork setup and prepress layout). In production banners take about 35 min to complete (20 min to print, 15 min to finish and pack). For standard <a href="https://axiomprint.com/product/classic-business-cards-160" target="_blank">business cards</a> it’s about 38 min on average pre-production. It takes only 22 min to finish (print, cut, box)
 Even with reorders the process is not too much different. Now we have to be extra careful to make sure all the details are matching the original order, and consistency is super important. (We have learned the hard way)
 So what actually happens before the ink hits the paper?
 

<h2>1. Choosing the Right Product</h2>
Printing isn’t just about putting ink on material—it’s about solving the client’s need with the right solution. That means understanding: 
<ul>
 <li>What is the product being used for?</li>
 <li>How soon is it needed?</li>
 <li>What’s the intended impact?</li>
</ul> 

Take this common example:
A client is on the<a href="https://axiomprint.com/product/roll-labels-335" target="_blank"> roll labels</a> page — but they’re using them as giveaways at an event. We know roll labels aren’t ideal for that use case, and it’s our job to guide them to something more appropriate, like individually cut stickers. 
Or a client wants <a href="https://axiomprint.com/product/presentation-folder-275" target="_blank">foil-stamped presentation folders</a>... for an event this weekend. It’s beautiful, but not realistic. So we pivot. Offer alternatives. Make it work without compromising the deadline or their budget. 
That consultation step takes time—but it’s how we ensure the final product is actually what they need. 
<h2>2. Getting the Artwork Right</h2>

We used to joke with clients/close friends:
“We’ll go ahead and start printing while you send us the file.” 
They’d pause for a second…
And then it would click: you can’t print anything without the artwork.
That was always our way of making a point - Nothing moves until the file is final. 
And when we say “final,” there are three major components to it: 
<ul>
 <li>Creative – The visual impact. Will it look professional on paper? Will those colors look right on Kraft paper? Will that thin font be ok in Foil Stamp? A good design matters, and it’s our responsibility to help guide that.</li>
 <li>Technical – File setup is everything: size, bleed, resolution, layers for embellishments like foil or white ink. Outlined Fonts, embedded images. To check and correct all this takes time. And when there are 20 different versions? Multiply the work by 20. </li>
 <li>Grammatical – As much as we try to stay away from this, it still lands on us. If there’s a typo—even if it’s in a client-provided file—it reflects on the final product. If it prints wrong, it usually needs to be reprinted… regardless of who made the mistake. (And no, we didn’t say we redo it for free 😉) </li></ul>
Finalizing artwork can take days of back and forth. Our data from March, 2024 shows that jobs would stay in pre-production averaging about 22 working hours. (With 8 hours shift that’s 2.75 days), while actual production averages just 14.8 hours (1.85 days).
 

<h2>3. How Automation Changed the Game</h2>

While the challenges above still exist—product guidance, artwork approval, and file prep—we’ve made huge progress in addressing them within the last 12 months. 
In the past year, we built our own in-house tool called ProofCheck.
It was designed specifically to tackle the most common issues that slow down pre-press. 
This system does what no off-the-shelf software could:

 <li>Verifies size and bleed accuracy</li>
 <li>Checks if front and back pages match the order specs and orientation.</li>
 <li>Provides the positioning / look of embellishment layers (like foil, spot UV, or white ink)</li>
 <li>Even runs a live spell check—on flattened files like JPGs—using built-in AI </li></ul>
Thanks to ProofCheck, what used to be in pre-production que for 1-2 days, now takes an average of just 5.8 hours.

And for reorders?
We’ve reduced that to just 15–20 minutes to validate and prep the files for production. 

 This isn’t a minor improvement. 

It’s a fundamental shift—and it’s been key to how we continue scaling by offering faster turnarounds, avoiding simple mistakes and providing better service for our clients—without sacrificing quality.Yes, print is still a process.
